The Trailblazer Overview

Chevy’s history with SUVs has been as bright as the sun since the 1990s, but Chevy was there for the dawn of the Sports-Utility Vehicle. The Suburban was Chevy’s first SUV, and the 1990s also saw the release of the Chevy Tahoe. The coming of a new century saw even further growth in Chevy’s SUVs with the release of the Trailblazer in 2001. However, the first incarnation of the Trailblazer was a midsize SUV, which ended up being only temporary. Many of the Trailblazer’s first wave of owners remember the Trailblazer as this midsize SUV, but a lot has happened since then.

The Trailblazer was discontinued in 2009, and after a thorough redesign, it was reintroduced in 2021. This new and improved Trailblazer wasn’t the Trailblazer everyone knew before because now the Trailblazer is a crossover SUV.

Chevy has spent the years since the original Trailblazer went on hiatus releasing a fleet of SUVs, including the Equinox, Traverse, Blazer, and Trax lines. With the return of the Trailblazer and Chevy’s move into the EV space with the Blazer EV and Equinox EV, the Trailblazer’s return was a welcome one and joined the Trax as one of Chevy’s two subcompact SUVs. Trailblazers cost a few thousand dollars more than the Trax on average, but the Trailblazer has proven to be Chevy’s highest-performing subcompact SUV.

Chevy’s inclusive automotive engineering means drivers who want a midsize, full-size, compact SUV or a subcompact SUV like the Trailblazer will find a vehicle to suit them. It’s not like the Trailblazer's market is an easy one to dominate; other manufacturers like Honda, Jeep, Kia, Toyota, and Buick have similarly priced subcompact SUVs. You’ve likely heard of subcompacts like the Honda HR-V, Jeep Compass, Kia Seltos, Toyota Corolla Cross, and the Buick Encore GX. These SUVs make up most of the subcompact SUVs on the market, but the Trailblazer is one of the most cost-friendly SUVs of the bunch. Don’t let the reasonableness of its price fool you—the 2023 Chevy Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX perform equally well, but Chevy’s SUV has more cargo space and costs more than $3,000 less than Buick’s subcompact. The Chevy Trailblazer is simply a better choice compared to its competitors.

The Chevy Trailblazer is a beloved subcompact SUV because, not unlike other Chevy vehicles, its quality is assured, the materials feel great, and the features you get for the money are never anything but first-class. You might want a subcompact SUV because you are looking for something that isn't overwhelming or overbearing in size, but you also want something that can comfortably fit up to five people.

The Trailblazer isn’t as large as it used to be in its early days as a midsize SUV, but with over 54.4 cu.ft. of cargo space in models released since 2021, it is big enough to handle band practice, travel sports games, and dog-grooming trips easily. The Trailblazer features a choice between turbocharged 1.2L and 1.3L I-3 engines and the option for all-wheel drive. It is a force to be contended with.
